Bee Inspired: Spring Cleaning Tips for a Fresh Start in Frederick, Maryland

Spring is finally here, which means it’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning! As the weather warms up and the flowers begin to bloom, it’s a great time to give your home a fresh start. But why not take inspiration from nature while you’re at it? Bees are a vital part of the ecosystem and work hard to keep their hives clean and organized. Here are some tips and techniques inspired by bees to help you with your spring cleaning, right here in Frederick, Maryland.

  1. Divide and conquer like a bee colony

Just like a bee colony divides its labor, you can divide your cleaning tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. Start by making a list of everything that needs to be done and then break it down into smaller tasks that you can tackle one at a time. This will help you stay organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Clean with natural products

Bees are known for their love of flowers, but did you know that they also use natural products to clean and disinfect their hives? You can do the same by using natural cleaning products that are safe for you, your family, and the environment. Look for products that are free of harsh chemicals and use ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.

  1. Declutter like a bee

Bees are very tidy creatures and work hard to keep their hives clutter-free. Take a page from their book and declutter your home. Go through your closets, cabinets, and drawers and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. This will not only make your home cleaner but also give you more space and reduce stress.

  1. Use organization tools

Bees use honeycombs to keep their hives organized and maximize space. You can do the same by using organization tools in your home. Invest in some storage containers, shelving, and baskets to help you keep everything in its place. This will not only make your home look neater but also make it easier to find what you need.

  1. Work together like a bee colony

Bees work together as a team to keep their hives clean and running smoothly. You can do the same by enlisting the help of your family or roommates. Assign everyone a task and work together to get everything done. This will not only make the cleaning process faster but also more enjoyable.

Spring cleaning can be a daunting task, but by taking inspiration from bees, you can make it more manageable and even enjoyable. By dividing and conquering, cleaning with natural products, decluttering, using organization tools, and working together, you can give your home a fresh start this spring. And if you’re in Frederick, Maryland, be sure to take advantage of the beautiful weather and natural surroundings to make your spring cleaning experience even better!

4 Reasons a Clean Office Is Important

4 Reasons a Clean Office Is Important

4 Reasons a Clean Office Is Important

If you have a job in an office setting, then you obviously understand how easy it is to get caught up in your day-to-day schedule. With emails that need to be sent out, papers that need to be signed, and meetings that need to be attended, your workload can seem pretty overwhelming at times. By the end of the day, you just want to clock out and go home.

Unfortunately, depending on your job and workplace, that could mean leaving behind a series of small messes that could accumulate into something much larger. When you’re on the clock, it’s easy to overlook. However, as time goes on, office cleanliness can become much more important than you may currently realize.

Here are 4 reasons to stay on top of all those office cleaning tasks:

Self-Confidence

First, let’s look at how an unpresentable workspace affects morale. Imagine for a moment a building, anything from a beautiful historical monument to a shiny new community center. As long as someone is working hard on the upkeep of this building, it will continue to look presentable.

However, now imagine if that building had a broken window and nobody replaced it. What would that do for the presentation of the building? How would that affect people’s views of the building? How long would it take for even more windows to be broken, and for public opinion of that building to crumble?

In social studies, this is called the Broken Window Theory, and it applies to your workspace as well. No matter where you work, be it an office or a garage, it’s been proven that having respect for your work environment helps boost confidence in your job and job performance.

Peer Respect

When working in an office, appearances can be extremely important, especially between peers. While it would be unfair to say that cleanliness is a reflection of hard work and responsibility, it does help your reputation in the workplace, especially in the eyes of your superiors.

There’s something to be said about a clean office, especially when you’re in the middle of a project (or several!) that are causing you a great deal of stress. No employee wants to appear as if they don’t have a situation handled, and the best way to say “I’ve got this” is with a desk free of clutter and an office clean of dust and dirt.

First Impressions

Perhaps you own your own company, employed by people who do respect you through and through. You might not feel the need to impress your staff, but if you’re working with the public, you’re going to need to impress your customers.

First impressions are crucial for any business, but especially smaller ones. Your entire business model is centered around the fact that people should utilize your services over a larger, more popular one. Your business can have the best deals, the most efficient employees, and the most experienced service, but if your workspace doesn’t reflect all of that, many of your potential customers simply won’t care.

We understand how time-consuming it can be running a small business, so sometimes little cleaning problems can seem arbitrary. However, it’s those little details that clients will notice.

Employee Health & Safety

As with any business, time is money. You want to get as much done while on the clock as possible not only to make your company look good, but to make yourself look good, as well. Unfortunately, that’s not something you can do when you’re home sick.

Health risks are the most dangerous side effects of a messy workspace. The transfer of various germs in an office setting is the largest cause of workplace sickness, and without a cleaning routine, your chances of getting sick get higher and higher every week. Even if employees do tidy up their desks or dust their windowsills, how often do they vacuum their carpeting or disinfect their appliances?

Hiring a cleaning service for your office space can prevent all of these problems from affecting you, your employees, your clients, and your company’s reputation.

4 Tips for Choosing the Right Cleaning Service for You

4 Tips for Choosing the Right Cleaning Service for You

4 Tips for Choosing the Right Cleaning Service for You

You’ve decided you need some extra help around the house, and you’re bringing in someone to do the cleaning. You’ve decided on how often you’d like to have your house cleaned, how much you’re able to spend, and generally what you’d like cleaned each time.

Now comes the difficult part: Choosing someone to actually do the work.

At the Busy Bee Maids, we’ve had years of experience being interviewed by clients looking to choose the right cleaning service for their needs. Throughout those interviews, we’ve compiled this list of 4 tips for choosing the right cleaning service for you:

Read Reviews & Get Referrals

Word-of-mouth is a powerful thing. Ask around to friends and family who have had cleaning services, whether in their homes or offices, whether they would recommend their service. Talk to them about what they liked, didn’t like, and what they wish would have been done better. Get as much honest feedback as possible – Did they always seem to miss one spot on the floor even after being reminded? Were the items on the counters not moved for cleaning? – to help you make the most informed decision as possible.

Once you have a list of a few possible cleaning companies, check their online reviews, whether through Google, Facebook, or directory services such as Angie’s List and Yelp. Don’t just read the positive reviews; look at the negative reviews and try to determine whether the criticism seems fair or not. As you’re reading these reviews, make notes of any patterns of complaints you see so you can ask about them in detail when it comes time to interview services.

Ask Questions

A professional service that really values your business is more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the service you’d receive. If a company doesn’t want to answer questions, or only limits you to a few queries, that means they’re not willing to work hard for customer service and may not even customize the service you provide to meet your needs. Many services will give you much of this information without you even asking, sometimes even on their websites or in promotional materials.

There are a variety of important questions that you should ask of any service that’s going to come into your home. Find out how they hire, screen, and train employees, and whether they’re bonded and insured. Ask what is included with a cleaning, as well as whether they bring their own supplies or if you must supply them. If you have pets, find out how the service handles them. Inquire about whether you will get the same cleaning team each time, and how the company handles when their employees call in sick.

Be Honest about Your Needs

It can be easy to compromise on certain items just to find an affordable service. But if you really need to have the inside of your oven cleaned occasionally, for example, or if your floors need special care, denying these needs is going to leave you dissatisfied with any service you hire and waste your money.

If you are up-front about what you need out of your cleaning service, you will be able to find someone to meet those needs. It may take you a few more interviews or a little more research, but as long as you know what you want and don’t compromise, you’re likely to be much more satisfied with the final product each time than if you were to remove something from your list for the sake of hiring a company.

Compare Prices

While you don’t want your decision to be solely based on the price, if all other things are equal about two services, choose the one that best fits your price range. Higher prices don’t necessarily mean better quality of cleaning, so as long as the service can provide everything you need done in your home, gets great reviews, and has satisfactorily answered all your questions, you can go with the lower-priced option.

Hiring a cleaning service means adding an extra expense into your budget. Stretching that expense too far for too long may make you more likely to cut things out if you’re dissatisfied or need to make some changes, while a lower-priced service may stick around longer since it’s easier to justify the price.

What Can I Expect From My Office Cleaning Service?

What Can I Expect From My Office Cleaning Service?

What Can I Expect From My Office Cleaning Service?

Whether you’re working hard or simply don’t have the time, the experienced team at the Busy Bee Maids can clean your commercial office space thoroughly and professionally.

We could spend all day promising we’re efficient, but what exactly can our clients expect from our office cleaning services?

Preparation

The first step to hiring a Busy Bee professional is to have a site walk-through. This not only assures that your service will be second to none, but also provides us with the details necessary to serve you best. You’ll be explaining exactly what kind of services you’re looking for, where said work will be done, and a detailed schedule for us to work with.

One of our managers will come to your workplace for an initial visit. By scoping out the environment, we’re getting a better understanding of its layout and culture, which ultimately helps us better approach the job. Depending on the size of the space, this should be a relatively short, but important, visit.

This is a great time to show us any cleaning supplies you plan to provide, as well as specify which areas of the workplace we’ll be cleaning. If there are any specific requests for certain areas of the workplace, now is the best time to show us.

Cleaning Services

Below is a checklist of the many services we provide for commercial office spaces. This is not a comprehensive list, of course; if special accommodations are needed, they should be specified during the walk through, and we’ll be happy to reach an agreement with you.

Office Spaces & Meeting Rooms

  • All areas dusted – on top, on the front, and underneath (all items moved and replaced)
  • Window sills wiped
  • Fingerprints washed from all woodwork
  • Door frames and switch plates polished
  • Vacuum where accessible
  • Trash emptied
  • Light covers wiped down or dusted
  • Ceiling fan dusted
  • Computer screens cleaned
  • Overall appearance of the office left neat and tidy

Break Areas and Kitchens

  • Countertops and backsplash cleaned (all items moved and replaced)
  • Cabinet fronts cleaned
  • Trash emptied
  • Sinks scrubbed (including behind sink) and left shining/faucet checked
  • Outside of oven and refrigerator cleaned (inside cleaned upon request)
  • Sills wiped down
  • Fingerprints washed from all woodwork, door frames, and switch plates
  • Crown molding dusted or wiped down
  • Floor swept and washed
  • In and outside of microwave cleaned

Bathrooms

  • Tiles and chrome cleaned and left shining
  • Sinks scrubbed and left shining/faucets checked
  • Toilets scrubbed inside and out including base and behind
  • Paper products replaced
  • Soap/hand sanitizer refilled
  • Mirrors cleaned
  • Sills wiped down
  • Trash emptied
  • Vacuum and wash floor

Every workplace is unique, and yours is no exception. We’re more than happy to visit any room in your commercial space and create a plan to clean it thoroughly so you can get back to business!

Office Cleaning Pricing: Hourly vs. Square Foot
Commercial Cleaning

Office Cleaning Pricing: Hourly vs. Square Foot

Office Cleaning Pricing: Hourly vs. Square Foot

When picking out a company that will be cleaning your office, it may get confusing to see different types of pricing. Hourly rates and rates determined by the square footage of your office are very common; but why don’t companies all use one or the other? The answer isn’t cut and dry – there are a lot of variables that go into how the company chooses to bill you.

Size of Facility

The size of your office will be a determining factor in how the cleaning service provider decides to charge you. Of course, the larger the office, the more expensive it will be to clean. But how exactly will it be priced? Most likely, the cleaning company will opt to charge by the square foot for big office spaces. Because of the larger space, this is typically the number of hours, equipment, and staff needed. The cleaning company will most likely judge the square footage and do a calculation to figure out how much time and equipment will be needed and then base the price off that calculation.

Larger spaces are often charged less per square foot but will, due to the size, be more per month. To save some money when you’re being charged by square foot, consider spaces in your office that won’t need cleaning, such as storage spaces, basements, or equipment rooms. You can opt not to have these areas cleaned, and save a bit of money on the overall cleaning price.

Geographic Area

Offices in metropolitan areas are likely more expensive to clean than offices in smaller towns. They’re may be larger and charged by square foot, while smaller offices in less populous areas will often be cheaper and charged by the hour.

That being said, you may be located in such a small area that there is not much competition for cleaning services. If this is the case, even your small office may be expensive to clean. You also may not be able to get quotes from different companies, and will likely be charged by the hour.

Do your best to get multiple quotes from companies, even if one charges per square foot and the other by the hour. This will help you figure out which company is going to give you the best deal (but remember, quality is also important!).

Type of Cleaning Needed

Whatever your size of office, the cleaning type you require will be a significant factor in how you are charged. Even if you have a smaller office, you may require additional services such as waxing floors, carpet washing, window cleaning, or bathroom cleaning. These will most likely be extra and sometimes charged by square foot.

Also, the cost will go up if you ask for cleaning past the typical vacuum and trash-takeout. You will be paying more because of the time and equipment needed if you, for example, request that the cleaning crew wipe down the desks, monitors, and keyboards of all of your 40 employees.

In addition to this, if you have a specialized facility, expect to be charged by the hour. This is most common with medical and healthcare facilities. Because of the level of detail and sanitation that are needed in this kind of office space, it will be more expensive and time-consuming to clean.

You’ll want to figure out how often to have your office cleaned, too. No matter the price structure, you should be able to get a discount on more frequent visits per week, since there won’t be as much mess accumulated between visits.

Things to Consider

Hourly versus square-foot pricing is a hard line to draw for many cleaning providers. It’s very situational. To make it easier on the company coming to quote you, clean before the walk-through to avoid a hefty initial deep-clean visit. In addition to this, measure your own space so you can avoid being accidentally overcharged if the company has to estimate your square footage.

Another factor that you may not think will influence cost is when you want the office cleaned. If you’re getting charged by the hour, it will cost you more to get your office cleaned during the normal work day, because the crew will most likely need to work slower to stay out of the way and not disturb your employees.

However your cleaning company decides to charge, the most important factor is that they are reliable, thorough, and bonded and insured. You want to spend your money on a service that will be worth every penny!

What Can I Ask My House Cleaner to Do?

housekeepers frederick md
Hiring a house cleaner means peace of mind when it comes to the appearance of your home. You want to arrive to a fresh household without the stress of dusting and vacuuming hanging over your head. But, what exactly can you ask your house cleaner to do? Are there services that they are unable to provide or ones that might cost extra without you knowing?

There are some things that almost every house cleaning service provides. Dusting the furniture, sweeping and vacuuming floors, cleaning windows, cleaning bathrooms, and cleaning the kitchen can all be pretty much expected.

Some tasks vary by cleaners. Some companies offer to change the bedding, take out the trash, iron clothes, and wash dishes (or load the dishwasher).

Some services even go as far as folding laundry, de-cluttering, polishing your silver, and tidying up your messes.

Most will not clean up toys, clean fireplaces, do “deep” cleaning (such as pulling out appliances and cleaning behind those).

>>Tips for preparing for your first house cleaning>>

When it comes to cleaning, though, there is no harm in asking what services are provided, can be provided if requested, and will not be provided (especially if a cleaner’s website is unclear on what exactly you can expect from their staff).

Have them come to your home for a free estimate and have a genuine discussion about what your expectations and requests are and what the cleaner can provide you. By starting the relationship off with honesty and transparency, you’ll be in for rewarding, professional, and happy interactions with your house cleaner or cleaning staff!

Once you’re ready to get an estimate, contact Busy Bee Maids, your local cleaning professionals. We can’t wait to meet you!

Getting Ready for Your First Housecleaning

housekeepers frederick md
Hiring a cleaning service is supposed to make your life easier, not more difficult. How involved do you need to be to make sure your house is ready to clean? The good news is that, as long as you follow a few guidelines, your home can be ready for your first house cleaning without much effort!

Declutter

Socks on the floor or a bathroom counter covered in beauty products may not be the best way to welcome the cleaning crew. Because of liability or a fear of misplacing your items, the crew may be hesitant to move anything you leave out. It’s best just to straighten up to make sure the crew can clean every inch of your home!

Secure Important Personal Items and Documents

While your crew has gone through background checks and thorough vetting, it is important to make sure you know where your valuables are and to keep them safe. Accidents happen, and you don’t want your cleaning crew to mistake an important bill or a precious knick-knack as trash.

Do the Dishes & Laundry (And Other “Chores”)

Your cleaning crew has a very important job: to make sure your house is shining by the time they leave. As nice as it would be, the dishes, laundry, or cleaning up after a pet shouldn’t be expected of them.

Figure out Pets

If you have pets who are wary of strangers or like to try to escape when people enter and exit your home, you may want to take them out of the house for the afternoon or lock them in a separate area not being cleaned. If your pets are friendly and non-troublesome, talk to the crew and make sure it won’t be an issue for your animals to be present during the cleaning.

Have a Conversation About Expectations & Details

Just like a relationship, communication is key! Before your first visit, make sure you discuss some important topics: How will the crew get into your home if you won’t be there (this includes any security system instructions)? Will they use their own supplies, or do you have special concerns or allergies and want them to use your supplies? What are your expectations for the service, and how will you provide feedback?

Check for Broken or Damaged Objects

Sometimes you may not notice a picture frame is cracked or there’s a dent in the wall. Make sure you’re aware of any damages to your home so you don’t notice them later on and become tempted to blame your cleaning crew!

Preparing for your crew’s first visit is an easy way to make sure you start the relationship off right.

How Often Do I Need to Schedule a House Cleaning?

house cleaning frederick md
When we first talk with a new housecleaning client, we often get asked how often most clients have their houses cleaned. We see a wide range of scheduling, from cleaning a few times per week to calling and scheduling on an as-needed basis.

How often you need to schedule a house cleaning depends on two major factors: Your individual needs and your budget.

Determining Your House-Cleaning Needs

Are you able to keep up with the daily cleaning routines of life, such as sweeping, laundry, and dusting? Are you frequently out of town but your family is at home? Do you just want someone to come in and deep clean the areas you can’t get to often, or to make everything sparkle and shine before the holidays or a party?

Knowing what aspects of your home cleaning you are able to keep up with, and want to maintain on your own, is the first step toward determining how often you should schedule a housekeeper.

If you are willing and able to maintain your home on your own, and just want some occasional help, setting up quarterly or bi-monthly cleanings may be right for you. For those who want a little extra help, like getting that bathroom really clean on a fairly regular basis, monthly cleanings are probably best. If you want to be able to come home each weekend and relax, knowing your house is clean so you can enjoy time with your family, consider weekly cleaning.

Determining Your Budgetary Restrictions

Quality housekeeping services aren’t going to come cheap, though many companies work hard to provide the best value to their clients. Every time you have a house cleaner come in, you will need to pay for his or her services, and more intensive cleaning tasks are going to cost more than light dusting and vacuuming.

If your budget is tight but you still need that extra bit of help, scheduling occasional deep cleans or cleaning before a special event may be ideal. For the budget that has a little more space, monthly or weekly cleaning can be scheduled.

Another factor to consider when determining cost: How much do you feel your time is worth? If you are short on time and want to be able to spend that time elsewhere, perhaps cutting back on costs in other areas to pay someone to tackle the routine cleaning tasks may improve your stress level and pay off in more ways than one.

7 Questions You MUST Ask Before Hiring a Commercial Cleaning Company

maid services frederick md
Choosing a cleaning service for your business may seem like a small decision, but it really can impact your business reputation and ability to conduct your business. If you hire a company that does a sub-par job, your office could be left dirty and unkempt, leaving you and your staff to do the rest. Pair that with a company that charges an arm and a leg for its services, and your business can be out a lot of money with very little to show for it.

Before choosing your next commercial cleaning company, here are 7 things you MUST ask the companies you consider:

What Services Do You Offer?

Different commercial cleaning companies offer different levels and types of services. Some provide full top-to-bottom cleaning, including ductwork and floor polishing. Others only offer surface cleaning, sweeping, and light bathroom cleaning. You need to find a company that offers the level of service you envision for your business cleaning. Some services to consider include:

  • Janitorial services
  • Window cleaning
  • Hard floor cleaning and maintenance
  • Carpet and upholstery cleaning
  • Power washing
  • Special event cleaning

Some companies automatically will disqualify themselves based on the types of services they offer, allowing you to dig deeper into the brass tacks of the company’s practices and prices when making your decision.

Do You Carry Insurance?

No matter how experienced and well-trained the staff, accidents happen. Things get knocked over and broken, or cleaners get injured. You want to be sure the company you hire has proper insurance in the event of damage done to your business’s property as well as workers’ compensation coverage for its cleaners. If the company you select does not carry sufficient insurance, you could be held liable for that expensive plate-glass window replacement or that cleaner’s bills from a broken leg.

How Do You Hire Your Cleaners?

In most cases, the cleaning crew is going to be in your building after hours. You need to make sure you can trust the crew with your equipment and confidential records. A reputable cleaning company should be willing and able to walk you through the hiring process, which should include extensive interviews and background checks. Once hired, staff members should be put through a training process to ensure that each member of their crew provides the same uniform level of service.

Can You Provide References?

A reputable company will be happy to provide the names and phone numbers of past and current clients for you to talk with. Contact as many of these references as possible and ask about the quality of service, reliability of the crew, and their overall satisfaction with the company. Also, search for each company you consider online and read as many reviews as you can find. References coming directly from a company are likely to be filtered to the most positive, while online reviews will give you a broader picture of the good and the bad.

How Many Facilities Similar to Mine Have You Cleaned?

Not all cleaning companies are experienced in commercial cleaning. Separate those experienced in cleaning businesses from those who just began offering the service with this question. While taking a chance on a service less experienced in commercial cleaning may help you get a good deal and can give a crew some much-needed experience, you are less likely to experience hiccups and issues with a company that has provided the service for several years.

Do You Provide Your Own Cleaning Supplies?

Some companies prefer to work with specific brands and types of products. In many cases, that means the company will provide them to each crew, or they may charge a monthly fee for supplies. Other companies may ask you to provide the products you wish to have used, allowing you to choose what’s best for your budget and any sensitivities your employees may have. If you are cost-conscious or particular about the products used in your office, make sure to find a company that allows you to provide your own.

Do You Offer Green Cleaning Services?

For some businesses, commitment to the environment is especially important. Maybe your office has made an effort to go as paperless as possible in recent years, or you have recycling bins out in every room. There are some commercial cleaning companies dedicated to using only green cleaning products. If this is an important cornerstone of your business, find a company that either provides its own green cleaning products or will allow you to provide your own.
